When the
occasion arises for you to have your jewellery appraised, the person
you consult with should possess the highest possible qualifications.
Mart is an Appraisal Expert in jewellery, registered with the Federation
of Appraisers (US)/Valuers (UK), Brokers and Auctioneers in Movable
Goods (Federatie
TMV).
Why
and when should I have my jewellery appraised?
Perhaps you are given or inherit some jewellery, but do not know
its real value. You may want to have the pieces appraised in order
to insure them, or you may simply want to know their potential resale
value.
What do I receive?
Once your jewellery has been examined, you will receive an Appraisal
Report. You should keep this report in a safe place, or for instance
with your Accountant or Insurance Agent.
To become an Appraisal Expert in jewellery in The Netherlands does
not happen overnight. First you must possess specialist knowledge
in your chosen field to become an Associate Member of the TMV. It
is only once you are registered as an Associate Member that you
can begin studying for the qualifying exams.
The examiners demand a broad-ranging knowledge of jewellery styles
and history, and a familiarity with a wide range of books on jewellery.
There are tests on metallurgy, goldsmith education, and gemology,
and candidates must be up to date on the current international state
of auctions and major exhibitions. In 2004 Mart was one of only
2 people to pass his appraisal exam. The other person was Felice
Lieftinck F.G.A., former Jewellery Specialist at Sotheby's Geneva,
now working instead at Christie's Geneva.
Note: Appraisals can not be done by picture alone,
nor over the phone. The actual piece must be examined. For appraisal
pricing options, please email
